Reading a domestic wallcovering spec sheet: weight, backing, and durability class
The data sheet, not the swatch, tells you what an American-made commercial wallcovering will do on a wall. Here is how to read the lines that matter.
A swatch tells a buyer what a wallcovering looks like; the spec sheet tells them what it will do. For domestic commercial product the data sheet is standardized enough that a buyer can read it confidently once they know which lines carry weight and what the numbers mean.
Weight, given in ounces per linear yard, is the first durability signal, and it maps to the type classes in CFFA-W-101, the Chemical Fabrics and Film Association's quality standard for vinyl-coated fabric wallcovering. Type I, roughly 7 to 12 ounces per linear yard, is light-duty for low-traffic areas. Type II, about 13 to 22 ounces, is the medium-duty commercial workhorse behind most corridors and public spaces. Type III is heavy-duty for high-abuse areas. A heavier number is not automatically "better" — it is matched to the traffic — but it is a direct, comparable figure across products.
Durability class is the second line, and a serious sheet cites ASTM F793, "Standard Classification for Wallcoverings by Use Characteristics." That classification sorts products into categories by tested properties, so a sheet naming an F793 category is telling a buyer the material passed a defined battery of abrasion, scrubbability, stain, and tear tests rather than merely asserting toughness.
Fire performance is the third essential line and, on domestic commercial goods, is almost always reported as an ASTM E84 result: Class A means a flame-spread index of 25 or less. Backing is the fourth. Fabric-backed vinyl behaves and installs differently from paper-backed or non-woven, and it affects both the adhesive and how cleanly the material strips off years later.
Read together, those four lines — weight and CFFA type, ASTM F793 category, ASTM E84 class, and backing — describe how a domestic wallcovering will perform, install, and eventually come down. A buyer who can read them compares two American-made products on evidence, and can hand a specifier exactly the figures a real 09 72 00 section will demand.
